Iran wins Asian Zurkhaneh Sports Festival

Tehran, Nov 25, IRNA- Iran stood top at the 1st Asian Zurkhaneh Sports Festival (AZSF) here Thursday night. Zurkhaneh, literally meaning house of strength, is the Iranian national sport also called varzesh-e pahlavani (sport of heroes) or varzesh-e bastani (sport of ancients) played in an Iranian traditional gymnasium. Zurkhaneh is not only a place where physical exercises are held but also one where chivalry is learned. The Zurkhaneh sportsman is first expected to be pure, truthful, good-tempered and then physically strong. Zurkhaneh and varzesh-e pahlavani have their roots in Iranian culture and date back at least 3000 years ago. Iran stole the show in the three-day event in the Shohada-ye Haftom-e Tir Hall in central Tehran with 78 points. Iraq finished runner-up with 70 points while Tajikistan, Afghanistan, South Korea, Pakistan, Nepal, and Indonesia ranked third to eighth with 65, 42, 38, 34, 31, and 27 points, respectively.
